WE all know what is expected of us as drivers following an accident/collision: stop immediately; prevent additional accidents with four ways and emergency triangles; notify law enforcement; check for injuries; and document the accident.
Sometime it is even MORE important to know what you should NOT do:
A driver should NOT
(1) Discuss specific details of the accident with others at the scene
(2) Volunteer unnecessary information – “I knew I had bad brakes”, “The sun was blinding me”…
(3) Admit fault
(4) Try to settle anything at the scene – as this is an admission of guilt and responsibility
AS you speak with the investigating officer, be honest; be factual; and NEVER speculate as to what may have caused the collision.
An accident scene is bad news; do not do anything to make it worse.
