We enjoy exemptions from some federal regulations because we are in the drive away industry and typically only drive a given vehicle for a few days.
It is important that you know these exemptions, and that you do not accept citations for them at roadsides, as some USDOT inspectors may not know our industry as well as we do:
- 393.95 (A) (6) EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT: the requirement to carry a fire extinguisher and reflective triangles is waived for drive away vehicles.
- 396.11 DRIVER VEHICLE INSPECTION: The requirement to prepare a DVIR (Drivers daily vehicle inspection – often printed on the back side of the log sheet ) is waived for drive away vehicles.
- 396.15 ANNUAL INSPECTIONS: The requirement to have an annual safety inspection sticker on the windshield and a written copy of the inspection in the glove box is waived for drive away vehicles.
A summary of these exceptions is in your legalization, should you need evidence of them at a future roadside inspection.
