50 to 75% of all motor carrier collisions occur when the driver is either backing or turning. These low-speed maneuvers cost companies and drivers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
Frequent traffic and mirror checks are required to prevent these collisions.
Before moving a driver should (1) determine the best path for his vehicle, (2) make sure his vehicle is actually following that path, (3) decide when a stop is necessary due to some hazard.
Remember, if you cannot see it in your mirrors, it is time to get out and look – to make sure you are not about to hit something. This time is better spent than the time it will take to report a collision which resulted because you did not plan ahead, then get out and look.
