Although less than 1% of driving is done backward, almost 50% of collisions nationwide occur when a driver is backing up.
The ways to avoid trouble are
* goal – Get out and look – get an understanding of the area you will be backing into – and then begin to back up immediately before it changes.
* Back slowly – so that you can control your vehicle.
* Check both sides as you back – 3/4 of the way into your backing maneuver, pace the distance between the vehicle and your desired stopping point. mark a guide spot on the ground to show you that spot. Stop when you get to the spot.
* Do NOT rely on your mirrors – as everything is closer than it appears in the mirrors.
* Use a reliable guide – instruct your guide to watch the area you are backing into, and to keep an eye on your blind spot. The guide should be on the driver’s side so he can see both you and the rear of your vehicle.
* Make sure that you and the guide have agreed to clear hand signals – so that there can be no misunderstanding of what he is telling you.
* NEVER back around a corner or into traffic.
* NEVER back out of an alley or driveway: back in and pull out head first when you re-enter traffic.
* Adjust your mirrors properly and keep them clean.
